Looking at us as 21st century consumer, why do we shop like we do?

There seems to be this constant need throughout society of  a sense of belonging, satisfaction and internal emotion . We consume to almost reassure ourselves we belong to a community, but why? We as a community define ourselves through our lifestyle… by what we consume.

As designers we play a huge part of the consumers way of thinking as we are the creators of everything society consumes day in day out. From this lecture I learnt that understanding culture is essential in the design process. If we don’t educate ourselves of the consumers values, beliefs, interests etc then how will our design appeal to anybody?
