How my time at Salford Business School prepares me for a career in digital marketing…

As some of you already know, I am studying a digital marketing masters (MSc). This blog post is a requirement for my current search and social media module. I have been brainstorming ideas for weeks, trying to decide upon the most valuable skills/lessons I have learnt to flourish the prospect of becoming a digital marketing executive. Apologies to any of my tutors or lecturers I offend, however, in my opinion the blog title is unexciting and I want to use this opportunity to transfer the knowledge I have accumulated to anyone in need of some digital marketing aid.

Firstly, if you are thinking about studying a digital marketing masters but feel you don’t have a undergraduate degree that will support you, don’t worry! You don’t have to have experience in digital marketing to study at Salford University. My undergraduate degree within graphic design has unexpectedly been great as it supports areas within digital marketing such as content creation and content marketing. The most important skills you need to own are writing skills and communication skills! You will be required to write essay after essay! You can read more about the course here.

Secondly, read! If you are a business or aspiring student and want to learn how to design a prosperous digital marketing strategy, read! Digital and Social Media Marketing: A results-Driven Approach (Heinze et al, 2016) has been my go-to book this year, I couldn’t recommend it more. It covers all the fundamental elements of digital marketing; strategy,  planning campaigns, social media marketing, content marketing, SEO (search engine optimism), analytics etc.

The thought of analytics can be quite daunting for some people but it is really not that bad once you get the hang of it. For anyone who runs an online business or website and wants to understand their audience and traffic, I highly recommend using Google Analytics. It is a great FREE tool to help you monitor ROI of advertisements, acquisition and general behaviour of your online audience. There are many other tools online which will offer a similar service, I just personally like the simplicity of Google. Click here to get started.

With Google Analytics you may notice your website is not getting acquiring as much traffic as you hoped. One way you can improve website or social media traffic is with SEO, which helps increase your visibility on search engines organically. You can pay for advertisements and to be seen on the first page of Google but it can be costly. Therefore, an important element of SEO you can concentrate on is keyword research. Which is basically, researching and finding words related to your subject area that have high search volume. There are so many FREE tools and websites that help you do this, I personally enjoy using Google Keyword Planner and Ubersuggests. Click here for more advice.

Ubersuggest is designed by Neil Patel and if you do want to learn more about digital marketing, visit his website. Alternatively, you can follow him across social media platforms, Twitter, LinkedIn and Youtube.

I hope that this blog post has been useful to some people and indirectly addressed the blog title for my assignment. If you do want any advice regarding digital marketing or applying to study at Salford University, please feel free to get in touch.

Sophia Rimmer.

Hello, Good Morning!

Hello, I’m back!

I can not believe I have not posted since 2016! You may be wondering what I’ve been doing for 4 years and honestly, to tell you in this blog post is going to take a very long time so I’ve link my Instagram profile here if you want to see my life in colour. Follow me!

The reason I have decided to post again is my decision to go back to university. I am currently studying Digital Marketing MSc at The University of Salford. My current module entitled SSMM (search and social media marketing) requires a blog post talking about myself and what I have learnt from the course, so, I guess this is just a warning for the spam I’m going to clutter your feed with.
